FIFA world rankings: DFB team climbs towards top 10

The German national team’s strong form is also reflected in the FIFA world rankings. A return to the top 10, where there are four changes, is getting closer.

After more than six years, the German national team can hope to soon be back among the top ten nations in the FIFA world rankings. In the October ranking, which the world governing body published this Thursday, the DFB team climbed from 13th to 11th place and is now in a better position than it has been in exactly two years. It last made the top 10 before the 2018 World Cup, only to crash from first to 15th place after being knocked out in the group stage.

Now, the team of national coach Julian Nagelsmann has overtaken Croatia, which remains twelfth, and Uruguay, which has slipped three positions to fourteenth place, thanks to the two Nations League victories against Bosnia-Herzegovina (2-1) and the Netherlands (1-0). With 1703.59 points, Germany is still 20.78 points behind the top 10, which is hardly catchable in an international match window.

The top is getting closer together

New tenth is Colombia, which had to let Italy pass. In addition, Portugal (7th) and the Netherlands (8th) swapped places. There were no position changes above that, but the top, where world champions Argentina continue to lead France and Spain, moved closer together. Behind them, fifth-placed Brazil made up points on fourth-placed England and distanced themselves from sixth-placed Belgium.

As always, the biggest leaps were at the bottom of the ranking. Greece, for example, jumped six places in the top 50 after their 2-1 win over England at Wembley and are now 42nd. Comoros (108th) and Sudan (110th) climbed ten places and are the biggest winners in October. The biggest fall was suffered by Tunisia, who dropped from 36th to 47th place.

The next edition of the world ranking will be published by FIFA on November 28. Germany will then have the chance to collect more points in the final Nations League games against Bosnia-Herzegovina (November 16) and in Hungary (November 19).
