When will the FIFA World Player 2021 be crowned?
On 17 January 2022, FIFA will present eight awards at what it calls “The Best FIFA Football Awards” – one of them for the World Footballer, i.e. the best player in men’s football. Important: For all awards, it is not the performances in the calendar year 2021 that are decisive, but the period from 8 October 2020 to 7 August 2021 (or 6 August for the women’s football awards).
Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player – what’s the difference?
The Ballon d’Or, traditionally awarded by the French magazine “France Football”, is the older award, although non-Europeans have only been able to vote since 1995. The FIFA World Player has existed since 1991. Between 2010 and 2015, “France Football” and FIFA cooperated and jointly awarded the “FIFA Ballon d’Or”. Since then, the two have gone their separate ways again (here are more details). The Ballon d’Or, which assesses performance in the calendar year and also the overall career, is still considered somewhat more prestigious. In 2021, Lionel Messi won it again.
How will the FIFA World Player 2021 be chosen?
All current coaches and captains of the men’s national teams, one media representative from each association and fans registered on the FIFA website are eligible to vote. They will vote from a shortlist of eleven candidates drawn up by a “panel of men’s football experts”, according to FIFA. In each of the four jury groups, the eligible voters are ranked according to their scores and points are awarded accordingly (e.g. 13 points for the highest scorer in the captains jury group). Whoever collects the most of these points will become the FIFA World Player.
