FC Bayern will be without Leon Goretzka and Alphonso Davies for their Champions League clash with Benfica Lisbon.
Goretzka is struggling with a cold, coach Julian Nagelsmann announced at his press conference on Tuesday. The midfielder, who was substituted at the break in the 5-1 win at Leverkusen, was “not in a position to play”, with Marcel Sabitzer “an option” as a substitute.
Davies, who Nagelsmann had to take off the pitch in the first half on Sunday, had “not suffered a structural injury, but a sign of fatigue. There is also the risk of a major injury. That’s why we decided to leave him at home to give him three or four days’ rest.”
Especially because of the “tight programme” until the international break in November, Nagelsmann wants to pay attention to Davies’ health. The Canadian had complained of pain in his rear thigh in Leverkusen. He was replaced by Josip Stanisic, who will now make his second Champions League appearance on Wednesday.
