With just over a month to go until the cup final weekend, FC Bayern is already in good form. Alba Berlin stops the surprise team’s high-flying run
German basketball cup winners FC Bayern Munich have confirmed their strong form in the Bundesliga and clearly defeated the former series champions Bamberg Baskets.
The Munich club led by former NBA pro Serge Ibaka won 91:69 (44:39) in its own arena on Sunday to secure its seventh league victory in a row. Ibaka (16 points) and Sylvain Francisco (17) were the best scorers for the team of Head Coach Pablo Laso. Bayern and Bamberg will also meet in the cup semi-final on February 17, then again in Munich.
Alba ends Würzburg’s streak
Alba Berlin, meanwhile, stopped Würzburg Baskets’ winning streak. The club from the capital won by 90:82 (42:37). Würzburg had previously strung together seven wins in a row and had not lost a league game since November.
Rasta Vechta, who were promoted, had already provided another sporting exclamation mark in an unusual top game on Saturday. The club from Lower Saxony won 106:102 after overtime at Ratiopharm Ulm to inflict the German champions’ fourth defeat of the season.
