Gerd Müller is one of the great legends of FC Bayern München. Now the “Bomber of the Nation”, who died two years ago, has received a very special tribute from the Munich team.
Gerd Müller knew how to score goals like hardly any other player football has produced – 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga matches and 68 goals in 62 international matches prove that quite clearly. If you know how to score goals, you also know how to cheer – and Müller did it in a way that was quite typical of him.
This is the pose in which the “Bomber of the Nation” will be seen from now on in front of the Allianz Arena, as FC Bayern inaugurated a statue in honour of Müller on the esplanade of the Allianz Arena in memory of the former world-class striker – showing him in his typical jubilant pose.
“You always have to preserve what was and what is at FC Bayern. Gerd was an incredible player and a great person who we will never forget. Today is a venerable day to remember him. He and Franz Beckenbauer are the icons that FC Bayern has produced,” said Honorary President Uli Hoeneß in the Bavarian capital on Tuesday.
Already the second statue for Müller
In August 2021, the most successful goal scorer in Bundesliga history died at the age of 75, and immediately afterwards it was announced that a statue would be dedicated to him. This is now in place – it is made of bronze, is one and a half times as tall as the player was, measures more than four metres on its pedestal and weighs around a tonne.
The monument was initiated by the Kurt Landauer Foundation – and quickly met with great approval from the record champion. Not surprisingly, given his merits. “Gerd Müller never made himself great, although he was one of the very greatest: he set standards in the world of strikers,” said Munich club president Herbert Hainer. Müller’s widow Uschi also attended the inauguration of the statue.
It is not the first statue Müller has received, as his hometown Nördlingen had already honoured him with a bronze monument last November. There is a sculpture showing the striker scoring the goal to make it 2-1 in the 1974 World Cup final against the Netherlands.
