Bayern’s basketball players demonstrate their strength in the cup. In a rematch of last year’s final, Oldenburg has no chance. Alba Berlin also make short work of the Lions from Braunschweig.
Defending champions Bayern Munich have reached the quarter-finals of the BBL Cup without much trouble. The Bavarians won clearly against EWE Baskets Oldenburg in their own hall on Sunday with 101:73 (55:35). In doing so, the Munich team also took revenge for their defeat in the league in Oldenburg just under a fortnight ago.
The Bavarians had everything under control from the start at BMW Park and started with a 13:2 run. Although the team from Lower Saxony came back within four points (16:20) in the course of the first quarter, the hosts then pulled away again. Already at the break, the game was practically decided with a 20-point lead for Munich.
The Bavarians also beat Oldenburg in last season’s final and won their only title of the 2022/23 season. The best scorer for the hosts this time was Carsen Edwards with 20 points.
Alba also progress without problems
Alba Berlin also got on with their cup task easily and lightly. The capital city team won against the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig with 96:71 (51:34). World champion Johannes Thiemann shone with 20 points.
Already in the first quarter, the host from the capital had taken control of the action. In the second quarter, Alba pulled away to a double-digit lead and did not let anything happen after the change of ends. The second quarter went to Berlin with 28:17, the third with 25:17 as well. Besides Thiemann, Matt Thomas showed a strong performance, sinking four of five attempts from beyond the three-point line on his way to 16 points.
In the quarter-finals, the two big favourites have to play away on 9/10 December. Bayern travel to Telekom Baskets Bonn, Alba Berlin to Syntainics MBC in Weißenfels. In addition, the Niners Chemnitz and ratiopharm Ulm as well as Rasta Vechta and the Bamberg Baskets will meet. This was the result of the draw on Sunday evening in Berlin.
