Favourite Anett Kontaveit from Estonia and American Bernarda Pera have reached the final of the tennis tournament in Hamburg and will play for the title at the European Open.
World number two Kontaveit beat Russia’s Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 7-5. Pera defeated seventh seed Maryna Zanevska of Belgium 6-2, 6-4, meaning both finalists have yet to drop a set in the tournament at the clay-court event.
The 27-year-old Pera again confirmed her strong form, she had already celebrated her first tournament win on the WTA Tour last week as a qualifier in Budapest. Kontaveit, who is one year younger, is the top seed in Hamburg and won against Andrea Petkovic in the quarter-finals. The 34-year-old from Darmstadt had retired injured and was the last German player to be eliminated at the Rothenbaum.
In the men’s tournament, the number 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz from Spain is still on course for the title. The 19-year-old shooting star won his quarter-final against the Russian Karen Khachanov 6:0 and 6:2. In the semi-finals, the number 6 in the world ranking list will meet Alex Molcan. The Slovakian seceded against Borna Coric (Croatia), who retired at 7:6, 2:0 to Molcan.
Earlier, the two unseeded Francisco Cerundolo and Lorenzo Musetti had reached the semi-finals. The Argentine Cerundolo won 6:3, 4:6, 7:6 (7:4) against Aslan Karazew from Russia. Musetti won somewhat surprisingly against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain 6:4, 6:3.
