In the absence of Angelique Kerber, Coco Gauff and Yelena Rybakina continue to play their way towards the title at the Berlin tennis tournament. One of the tournament favorites is injured and retires
World number two Coco Gauff has reached the quarter-finals of the Berlin tennis tournament. The US Open winner beat Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 7:6 (8:6), 6:2 on Thursday and will now face Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur. The 2022 tournament winner beat Linda Noskova from the Czech Republic 6:7 (5:7), 6:3, 6:4.
Gauff is seeded number one at the 922,573 US dollar preparatory tournament for Wimbledon. German players are no longer taking part after Angelique Kerber and Jule Niemeier lost their opening matches.
Former Wimbledon winner Yelena Rybakina also made it into the round of the best eight. The Kazakh beat Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova 6:4, 7:5 and will now face former world number one Viktoria Azarenka (Belarus) at the WTA 500 event.
For Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, on the other hand, the tournament is already over. The Czech had to retire from her round of 16 match against Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya at 5:5 after injuring her hip. It was initially unclear whether her start at the third Grand Slam tournament of the year was in jeopardy. The grass court classic in Wimbledon begins on July 1.
