Fans flee onto the pitch: Lyon’s cup match in Paris abandoned

In France, there has been another spectator riot. The cup match between second division FC Paris and Olympique Lyon was abandoned shortly before the second half kicked off.

The players had only just returned to the pitch, but looked straight into an area of the fan curve in concern. Supporters of both clubs threw fireworks at each other shortly before the start of the second half. Numerous spectators then sought shelter inside the stadium and rushed onto the pitch.

The players, accompanied by stewards, immediately left the pitch and the match at the Stade Charlety was abandoned after a 45-minute break at 1-1. The second division side took a surprising lead, but conceded the equaliser just before the interval whistle.

In the current season, there have been repeated incidents in France. On 21 November, the first league match between Lyon and Olympique Marseille was abandoned after a bottle was thrown at Dimitri Payet, and Lyon was deducted a point. Payet had also been hit by a bottle in an away match in Nice in August, and OGC were also deducted a point as a result.
