Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United have parted 2-2 on aggregate. The home side twice countered the opening goals by Magpies attacker Wilson.
Newcastle, who started with Wilson in place of the injured Isak after their 1-0 loss to BVB, got off to the better start and registered the first opportunity. Longstaff’s shot from a half-right position whizzed inches past the left post (8th).
Wilson scores with a side-footed shot
The Wolves, playing in front of a home crowd, also kept getting into the final third, but the visitors created the better chances. They took the lead in the 22nd minute after José Sa failed to hold onto a Gordon cross and Wilson side-footed the ball into the net.
Lemina responds with brains
Wolves responded with more energetic attacking play and as a result also got dangerously in front of the opponent’s goal from time to time. Matheus Cunha failed after just under half an hour to make a strong save from Pope (29th), who did not look good seven minutes later. On a corner kick, Newcastle’s backman reached next to the ball and invited Lemina, who gratefully accepted and headed in for the equalizer (36th).
The visitors knew how to up the ante again after conceding the goal and were awarded a penalty in first-half stoppage time, which Wilson converted to give Newcastle the lead again (45.+4).
Hwang scores again to equalize
After the break it was all one way, the Magpies defense was in demand throughout and defended well away from Wolves attacks until the 70th minute. After that, however, came the appearance of Hwang, who superbly outwitted Longstaff with a hook and made it 2-2 (71st).
The game was running towards its end, only in stoppage time there was another upset when Kalajdzic was brought down in the penalty area by Lascelles, but was not awarded a penalty for it (90.+1). Referee Anthony Taylor had not looked at the situation.
Wolves host Sheffield United next Saturday (4pm). Newcastle travel to Old Trafford for Wednesday’s League Cup Round of 16 tie (9:15 p.m.).
