Despite Hamilton being on pole position, it was Sebastian Vettel that was victorious at the Spa race. All of the action took place in the first lap with Nico Hulkenberg causing a huge crash on Turn 1, which saw Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc in a horror crash. A shunt from Hulkenberg threw Alonso’s car into the air and over Leclerc’s (video below). Many experts believe that the Halo could have saved Leclerk’s life, such as the seriousness of the crash. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries.

Vettel powered past Hamilton to gain lead
It was also in the first lap that Vettel gained the lead over Hamilton with Lewis starting of the event: “He drove past me like I wasn’t even there on the straight, so we need to keep pushing to see if we can catch up.” Vettel held onto his lead to finish first, with Hamilton crossing the line next.

Verstappen cheered on by Dutch fans
Max Verstappen will be pleased that he claimed third place, perhaps given some added motivation by the hoards of Dutch fans that had made the short journey over the border to back their local driver.
Meanwhile, it was bad news for both Kimi Raikkonen and Daniel Ricciardo as they were involved in a separate incident that meant neither cars could finish the race.
Vettel win closes the gap
Hamilton’s lead at the top of the Drivers standings is now down to 17 points and both he and Vettel have won 5 races this year. Verstappen’s podium finish ensured that he overtook his Red Bull teammate Ricciardo to move into 5th place in the standings.
