“Extremely wild situation”: Sommer speaks out about Bayern time

Yann Sommer has been playing for Inter Milan since this season. Before that, he spent six months at Bayern, not an easy time for the keeper, who now looked back in the company of the national team.

When Manuel Neuer suffered a worse injury last winter and was to be out for a long time, the Munich side found themselves under pressure at the goalkeeper position and brought in Gladbach’s Yann Sommer. The Swiss national keeper had previously proven his quality time and again in the Bundesliga.

But of course the focus in Munich was on him more than in Gladbach. Sommer then also afforded himself one or two insecurities and was criticised for that. “Of course it was unpleasant in parts and does not pass you by without leaving a trace,” the 34-year-old said in the circle of the national team, according to Swiss media. “The most important thing was that I tried to perform and help the team to be successful. Fortunately, that also succeeded in the end.”

Sommer won the championship with the Munich side after a difficult season. Bayern had a lot going on this year, including the coaching change from Julian Nagelsmann to Thomas Tuchel. “We had an extremely wild situation at Bayern. Dismissals, changes, a lot of unrest and various topics besides sport,” Sommer said in retrospect.

Sommer: “I learned how things work at Bayern “

Overall, it was a step for the Swiss, in which he learned a lot and was able to mature further. However, he also got to feel how quickly you come under criticism. “I learned how things work at Bayern. You pick one or two players, then the media fires. And then you pick two new ones. And then it was my turn. But I didn’t feel like fighting back publicly,” said the 34-year-old.

Since summer, the keeper has been playing for Inter Milan in Italy, where he has played eight times in the league and twice in the Champions League. Sommer and his teammates are currently in second place behind Milan. But now the league takes a break and international matches are on the agenda. For Switzerland, the European Championship qualifier on Sunday (6 p.m.) against Belarus is on the agenda.
