Extreme H presents hydrogen racing car – and is coming to Germany

The Extreme E successor series Extreme H has unveiled the 550 hp hydrogen racer Pioneer 25 – a race is planned in Germany for the first time in 2025

Extreme E becomes Extreme H: from 2025, the previous electric SUV racing series will be replaced by a new championship in which the vehicles will be powered by hydrogen. On Thursday, Extreme H presented the new race vehicle in London within sight of Tower Bridge: The Pioneer 2025.

Like the Extreme E race car, the new vehicle was developed by Spark Racing Technology. While both vehicles have certain similarities on the outside, there is a significant difference under the hood.

While the Extreme E is battery-powered, the Extreme H uses hydrogen as fuel. Hence the name, as H is the chemical symbol for hydrogen. However, unlike other racing projects on the circuit, this is not burned in a combustion engine, but converted into electricity in a fuel cell.

The Pioneer 25 develops a maximum output of 400 kilowatts or 550 hp. This enables the 2,200 kilogram vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and climb gradients of up to 130 percent.

While the Pioneer 25 is technically a standardized car, the teams have the option of designing the front and rear bodywork and headlights to match the appearance of production cars.

“We are incredibly proud to be able to present the first hydrogen racing car and the Extreme H Series to the world,” says series founder Alejandro Agag. The Spaniard is a pioneer of electric racing and has already created Formula E and Extreme E.

“This presentation is not just about a new vehicle, but about pioneering the future of sustainable motorsport. Hydrogen fuel cells offer a remarkable opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint and promote clean energy solutions, and we are proud to be leading the way with Extreme H,” Agag continued.

Extreme H is planning ten races at five venues for the 2025 season. This will include a race in Germany. However, Extreme H has not yet announced exactly when and where it will be held. The season opener is to take place in Saudi Arabia and the finale in the USA. In addition to Germany, there will also be stops in Great Britain and Italy in Europe
