Extension at 40: Ibrahimovic to stay with Milan

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will remain with Italian champions AC Milan for the 2022/23 season. The Rossoneri officially announced the contract extension with the Swede.

40 years old and not a bit tired: that Zlatan Ibrahimovic would extend his contract with Milan, which expired on 30 June, had already been hinted at in recent weeks. Since Monday it is now official: The Swedish superstar has signed a contract for the 2022/23 season and will continue to wear the number 11 at Milan.

Multi-months forced break due to knee surgery

However, it remains to be seen when Ibrahimovic will be able to return to action. The attacker is still recovering from the consequences of a knee operation, which was performed after winning the Scudetto with Milan. The planned operation was to stabilise Ibrahimovic’s knee. At the time of the operation at the end of May, doctors estimated that he would be out of action for seven to eight months. Due to problems with his left joint, Ibrahimovic had to take frequent breaks during the past season.

Nevertheless, Ibrahimovic contributed to Milan’s championship with eight goals in 23 league games. He thus achieved one of the goals he set himself before his career ended. Because of this and the knee operation, there had been speculation about whether the 40-year-old would hang up his boots with the Scudetto. But his extension had already crystallised over the early summer.

Ibrahimovic has played for Malmö FF, Ajax Amsterdam, Juventus Turin, Inter Milan, FC Barcelona, PSG, Los Angeles Galaxy and Manchester United in his long career. He has been wearing the Milan jersey for the second time since 2020, having played for the Rossoneri from 2010 to 2012.
