Extended break: Kerber will not compete in Cincinnati

Angelique Kerber will not be competing in the top-ranked tennis tournament in Cincinnati next week.

The German number one took an extended break after her disappointing third-round exit at Wimbledon and only recently returned to training, her management told dpa. The WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati starts on Monday.

This means that the 34-year-old will go into the US Open without much match practice. The last Grand Slam tournament of the year starts on 29 August. In the week before there are only two smaller tournaments in Granby (Canada) and Cleveland.
