Croatian defender Domagoj Vida is set for a move to twelve-time Greek champions AEK. The 33-year-old moves on a free transfer from Besiktas and is expected to arrive in Athens for a medical on Thursday
Vida, who also briefly signed for Bayer Leverkusen earlier in his career, will sign a two-year contract in Athens.
The Croatian had joined Besiktas from Dynamo Kiev at the start of 2018, where he made 135 league appearances (15 goals) until the close season. With Croatia, Vida was runner-up in the 2018 World Cup.
New stadium “Hagia Sofia “
AEK are aiming for a fresh start after a messed-up season that ended with them missing out on European competition. The newly built stadium with the historic name “Hagia Sofia” is to be inaugurated in September.
Vida is the Athenians’ fourth notable new signing after former Hoffenheim player Mijat Gacinovic, Denmark’s Jens Jönsson (joined from Cadiz) and Mexican midfielder Orbelin Pineda (from Celta Vigo). In addition, AEK is said to have strong interest in Leverkusen striker Joel Pohjanpalo.
