After parting ways with Marcelo Bielsa on Sunday, Premier League strugglers Leeds United found what they were looking for just one day later: Former RB Leipzig coach Jesse Marsch is taking over.
It didn’t work out for Jesse Marsch at RB Leipzig. The 48-year-old US-American, who was installed as Julian Nagelsmann’s successor in the Saxony region last summer, was unable to anchor the club at the top of the Bundesliga alongside Bayern and Dortmund as planned. After several setbacks, Marsch was finally dismissed at the beginning of December.
According to RB managing director Oliver Mintzlaff, Marsch had already approached the club’s management after the 7th and 10th games and reported that he did not know whether he was the right coach for this team.
Now the coach has a new opportunity in a new country: Leeds United from the English Premier League has reacted just one day after parting ways with Marcelo Bielsa (66) by signing the former coach of New York Red Bulls and FC Red Bull Salzburg. At the club, which is mired in relegation worries with just 23 points from 26 league games, Marsch can now show whether he is the right man here for the team around players such as ex-Freiburg player Robin Koch, Raphinha or striker Rodrigo Moreno.
“Philosophy and football style fit well “
Leeds’ sporting director Victor Orta says he is delighted with the signing at this difficult time for the club. “We are delighted that Jesse will lead us into a new chapter. We had him on our radar years ago during his time in Salzburg. Especially his philosophy and style of football fit well with the club and the players. ”
Beauty is likely to be put on the back burner in the coming weeks – twelve games remain in this season. Priority one for the Peacocks is staying in the league – and stability in the defence, which recently suffered a 2-4 defeat to Manchester United, a 6-0 defeat at Liverpool FC and a 4-0 defeat at Tottenham. The first tasks for the US-American, who also spent 14 years as a player in the American MLS (above all for Chicago Fire): a visit to Leicester City on Saturday (1.30 p.m.) and important home games against Aston Villa and Norwich City afterwards.
