Even winning the cup won’t save him: Ten Hag faces the end at United

At the end of the past season, Manchester United’s position in the Premier League table is worse than it has been since 1990. Although the Red Devils can still win the FA Cup, coach Erik ten Hag is said to be facing the end regardless

The usually well-informed Guardian reports that those responsible at the English record champions have reportedly decided to sack coach Erik ten Hag. The result in the FA Cup final against city rivals Manchester City on Saturday afternoon should not change this. The Manchester United coach is facing the end

Slump in performance after strong start to the year

United scored just 60 points in 38 games this season and finished eighth in the final standings. The last time Manchester finished lower was in the 1989/90 season, when they finished 13th. A strong start to 2024, in which the Red Devils won all of their first six Premier League games, was followed by a slump in performance from the beginning of April, meaning that even two victories against Newcastle and Brighton at the end of the season could not save them from certain participation in European competition.

Ten Hag, who has been in charge at United for two years, could still save his side’s place in international competition with a cup win against their city rivals, but those in charge do not want to make their decision dependent on one game. After United finished third in the pre-season and won the League Cup, ten Hag has been accused of not developing the team and not properly integrating his new signings

Tuchel among the succession candidates

The English newspaper throws Mauricio Pochettino, who recently resigned from Chelsea FC, his predecessor Graham Potter, Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town), national team coach Gareth Southgate and Thomas Frank (Brentford FC) into the ring as successors – and the name Thomas Tuchel is also mentioned. The outgoing Bayern coach had recently openly flirted with a return to the Premier League. According to the Guardian, Tuchel is the favorite for the job, but talks with Pochettino have also already taken place
