European Judo Championships: Wagner takes silver, bronze for Böhm

On the last day of the individual competitions, two well-known fighters produce strong results

First big success for Germany at the European Judo Championships: Anna-Maria Wagner won the silver medal in Zagreb. In the weight class up to 78 kilograms, the 2021 world champion was only beaten in the final on Saturday by France’s Audrey Tcheumeo, who won her fifth European title. This is Wagner’s second medal at a European Championships, having won bronze in Tel Aviv in 2018.

Wagner’s teammate Alina Böhm, European champion in 2022 and 2023, took bronze in the same competition. She defeated Ukraine’s Yelizaveta Lytvynenko in the small final. She had previously also been defeated by Tcheumeo in the tournament. For Böhm and Wagner, qualification for the Olympic Games in the summer is still at stake; only one of the two can earn a starting place for Paris. Wagner won the bronze medal at the Games in Tokyo 2021.

Performance at the World Championships in Abu Dhabi from May 19 to 24 will also be relevant for Olympic qualification. The European Championship individual competitions end on Saturday, while the winners of the mixed team competitions will be determined on Sunday.
