EuroLeague record for Obst: Bayern also beat Barca at home

Andreas Obst has led FC Bayern Munich to another home victory in the EuroLeague. In the top-of-the-table clash against FC Barcelona, the German world champion set a EuroLeague record by making 11 three-pointers. Munich ran out clear winners, beating Barcelona 100-78.

Obst had already equaled the record of ten buckets from outside in the third period – only Andrew Goudelock and Shane Larkin (twice) had managed that feat before him. He drained six threes in the third quarter alone, with the seventh turning out to be a record breaker. He finally broke the record in the final minute. With 34 points (11/16 3P), the 28-year-old was of course also the top scorer for Bayern. Carsen Edwards scored 25 points (9/17 FG), while Jabari Parker (23) was the top scorer for Barca.

Bayern got off to another good start in the SAP Garden, with Obst quickly catching fire, but his teammates also drained their open threes, which Barcelona repeatedly allowed. There were six out of 11 after ten minutes, with Shabazz Napier adding the final point with the siren to round off a good quarter in which Bayern also did not miss a single two (28:21).

Onuralp Bitim, who is on loan from Fenerbahce, also saw his first minutes of play in this phase, but did not make an impression. The Catalans slowly worked their way back into the game in the second period, but Bayern found the hot hand again in Obst midway through the quarter. In addition, the visitors again made a few easy mistakes, which Bayern usually punished clinically on the other side. Devin Booker was back in action after foul trouble, while Edwards remained cold from outside but moved effectively into the zone. As a result, Bayern led by double digits (48:38) at half-time.

Andreas Obst drained six threes in a row

After the break, Munich missed a two in its eighth attempt, but Obst scored six threes in a row. Kevin Punter (7, 2/12) remained pale for Barca, with former NBA pro Parker shouldering the team’s burden instead. But against an in-form Obst, it hardly mattered. The German international only missed a shot two minutes before the end of the period, by which time Bayern were already leading by 20 points. He was given a standing ovation when he was substituted, with the home side leading 77:58 going into the fourth quarter.

Without Obst, Edwards took over the scoring again with a few drives, Barca didn’t get much done, and the win was never in jeopardy. Obst returned for a spell and in the final minute actually managed his 11th three-pointer, causing the arena to explode.

The win sees Bayern overtake Barcelona in the table and move up to third in the EuroLeague with an 8-3 record; Piraeus has the slightly better goal difference. Fenerbahce (9-2) continues to lead the way. The international match weekend means that there are no games in the BBL, so Bayern will not be in action again until next Friday, when they will be guests of Red Star Belgrade, who lost the derby against Partizan on Thursday.
