ESM XI January: Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold dominates – Wirtz represents the Bundesliga

Liverpool FC has three players in the ESM XI for January, with Trent Alexander-Arnold leading the way. Florian Wirtz is the only Bundesliga player represented.

Liverpool played eight games in January, losing only two of them, including the meaningless last Champions League game of the league phase at PSV Eindhoven (2-3). The Premier League leaders played with a B-team, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also missing out. And with him, the driving force of the game, because the right-back with an urge to attack delivered a solid performance in January. The 26-year-old is also represented in the ESM team in January, with seven votes rewarding his performances at the start of the year.

In captain and center-back Virgil van Dijk (5 votes) and forward Mohamed Salah (4), two more Liverpool players are represented in the January selection.

Kylian Mbappé also received seven votes, the same as Alexander Arnold, and is therefore included in the top eleven of the month. The Frenchman has got off to a really good start in 2025 – three games, five goals in the league in January speak for themselves, with his outstanding performance, including a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s 3-0 win at Real Valladolid, being particularly noteworthy.

The Bundesliga has become a rarity in January, with only one professional from the top German division represented in the ESM team: Florian Wirtz. The Bayer Leverkusen playmaker picked up where he left off in the old year – with some strong performances, such as in the 3-1 win against Mönchengladbach or the 2-2 draw in Leipzig, where he set the tone.
