Eriksen makes Premier League comeback on Saturday

“A great day for all of us”: Christian Eriksen will play in a professional match for the first time since his cardiac arrest on Saturday.

The 30-year-old midfielder will be part of Brentford FC’s squad for the first time on Saturday (4pm) at home to Newcastle United and will also “be on the pitch”. Coach Thomas Frank made the announcement on Friday.

Eriksen, who played for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League between 2013 and 2020, made the switch to the promoted side on a free transfer in January and had already made his debut in a test match recently.

After suffering a cardiac arrest at the European Championships on 12 June 2021, the Dane had a defibrillator fitted and was no longer eligible to play for his former club Inter Milan.

Brentford could do with a breath of fresh air right now

“This is a great day for all of us, but especially for Christian and his family,” compatriot Frank said on Friday. His team could do with a bit of fresh air on the pitch: After a remarkable start to the season, Brentford are now threateningly close to the relegation places.

Opponents Newcastle could overtake the “Bees”, who last won a league game on 2 January (2-1 against Aston Villa), in the table on Saturday.
