Enormous increase compared to last year: LoL Worlds Final with viewer record

New record performance in terms of ratings: At the peak, more than 70 million people tuned in to the LoL World Championship. An increase of just over 60%.

The eSport is booming in Corona times. More and more people are tuning in to events from virtual sports. Riot Games official viewership figures for LoL Worlds 2021 clearly underline this trend.

The Worlds final between DWG KIA from South Korea and EDG from China, was watched by 73,860,742 people simultaneously, according to the publisher. This year’s peak surpassed last year’s by a full 60.33 per cent.

EDG’s first World Cup title wows the masses

The 2020 Worlds peaked at just over 46 million, while around 44 million fans watched the finals spectacle in 2018 and 2019.

Outsiders Edward Gaming (EDG) surprisingly won the title in the final. Certainly also a factor for the new record number. The underdog team’s run was broadcast in 18 languages on 19 channels and a total of 34 different platforms.

A complete success for Riot. Having the LoL highlight of the year take place in Europe turned out to be a smart move. There are also already venues for the upcoming World Championship: The 2022 Worlds will take place in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
