EL final 2027 in Frankfurt, ECL final 2026 in Leipzig – Stuttgart comes away empty-handed

At a meeting on Wednesday, UEFA made various decisions: for example, the 2027 European League final will be held in Frankfurt and the 2026 Conference League final in Leipzig. As a result, Stuttgart’s bid could no longer be considered.

After the European Championship at home next summer, the next highlights on German turf are casting their shadows ahead: As UEFA decided at a meeting in Dublin on Wednesday, the 2026 Conference League final will be held in Leipzig. The Champions League final will be held in Budapest in two years’ time, the women’s CL final in Oslo and the Europa League final in Istanbul.

In the following year, no decision has yet been made regarding the men’s and women’s Champions League finals. According to UEFA, there are reasons for this: Whether the men’s final can take place in Milan’s San Siro will not be decided until September – by then, the Italian association will provide information on the stadium’s renovation plans.

Stuttgart had applied to host the women’s final of the premier class in 2027. However, because two finals are already being held in Frankfurt and Leipzig in 2026 and 2027, UEFA has stated that it “cannot consider” Stuttgart’s application. A “new bidding process will therefore be opened”.

Rumor has it that the two finals awarded to Istanbul could be a UEFA test for a possible European Championship in Turkey in 2032.

Axel Hellmann, CEO of Eintracht Frankfurt, sees the awards as a great appreciation. “Because people know that we can organize something like this perfectly,” says Hellmann. The infrastructural standard in Germany is high, he emphasized. “That’s why it’s no surprise that we were given special consideration.”

The UEFA Executive Committee has also announced that following successful test runs in Germany, England and France, other countries will also be allowed to use standing areas in the European Cup from the 2024/25 season. The Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Scotland and Austria will therefore also be allowed to sell standing-room tickets. “This will ensure a larger sample size and data diversity,” UEFA believes.

London, Dublin and Athens to host this year’s final

This year’s Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund will take place on June 1 at Wembley Stadium in London, the Europa League final between Atalanta Bergamo and Bayer 04 Leverkusen this Wednesday evening in Dublin and the Conference League final between Olympiakos Piraeus and AC Florence on May 29 in Athens.
