After the end of eSports in its previous form, Konami is launching the new era of eFootball 2024 with club events – and an impressive number
The newly created structures of eSports are more open in eFootball 2024 than they were in eFootball Championship Pro, which Konami officially discontinued at the beginning of December 2023. Instead of clubs competing against each other with fixed teams in an international league, there will now be “club events” in which one representative per club will be chosen to represent the club at international level. A “disaster” for three-time world champion Walid Rachid ‘Usmakabyle’ Tebane, this change represents the future of soccer simulation for Konami.
Club events leave questions unanswered
After FC Barcelona kicked things off at the end of 2023, FC Bayern Munich is now following suit, inviting players to the Club Event from January 15. Nothing entirely new for the Munich team, as the German record champions already looked for their team for the Virtual Bundesliga in FC 24 with a fan tournament
However, eFootball 2024 certainly raises questions about how involved the club really is in the eSports revolution. After all, Bayern was not the only club to disband its eFootball department after the end of Championship Pro. It is currently unclear whether clubs, for example, actually supervise and coach their representatives, or just sponsor them with their name and crest.
Why Konami still has reason to be happy
Meanwhile, Konami was more transparent with an impressive success figure: eFootball has recorded over 700 million downloads to date, which is why the developer has reason to celebrate. Players should also benefit from this. The Japanese company is enticing its players with several extra rewards, who can also use this opportunity to apply for a position at FC Bayern.
