Before the flight to Milan, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl answered a few questions. One of the topics was goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. And the approach in the first fifteen minutes.
What the biggest potential stumbling blocks could be in the endeavor to turn around the home defeat from the first leg? Max Eberl could think of two: “Our lack of chance conversion at the front and individual mistakes at the back.”
Ideally, neither should play a role this Wednesday for FC Bayern away at Inter Milan. Eberl was decidedly optimistic in a media round at Munich Airport. “I’m not worrying about what would happen if we were to be knocked out. Otherwise, I’d be a bad sporting director,” he said.
It then became tactical: How should the Bayern team approach the game when it is imperative to catch up? “We shouldn’t make the mistake of blindly trying to score in the first 15 minutes,” said Eberl: “If we manage to do that, it would be nice, but not to cause trouble.” Every goal against makes it even more difficult to catch up.
He was also asked what advice he would give to young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig for his appearance at the San Siro. “Just leave him alone,” was Eberl’s wish. “He knows big stadiums. Even if it’s only the second division, the Rhein-Energie Stadium in Cologne is relatively large and also relatively loaded with pressure.”
In addition to Urbig, Daniel Peretz and Leon Klanac are part of the trio of goalkeepers for the game in Italy. The injured Manuel Neuer is traveling as moral support, Sven Ulreich is also not in the squad.
