Another miss from the spot – and EA SPORTS is taking another point off in FC 25. This time, it’s Serge Gnabry who missed a penalty against VfL Bochum.
Serge Gnabry didn’t actually do that much wrong. He beat the goalkeeper, aimed for the left corner – perhaps a little too accurately, as commentators often tend to say in these moments. The ball hit the inside of the post and rebounded back into the field.
Bayern thus missed out on an early 2-0 lead. Although Raphael Guerreiro scored for the record champions a little later, it was not enough: VfL Bochum turned the game around (3-2) and won in Munich for the first time since 1991.
The immediate consequences for Gnabry were mainly virtual: in EA SPORTS FC 25, the developer lowered his penalty attribute by three points to 67. The FCB professional is not an isolated case: just recently, Vincenzo Grifo had to lose digital feathers and lost three points in the aforementioned attribute due to his penalty misery.
Victor Boniface has also suffered this fate. After his missed attempt against Eintracht Frankfurt, EA SPORTS also reduced his value by exactly three points. Curiously, there is no comparably high bonus for converted penalties. Harry Kane, who converted his 30th penalty in a row against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, received “only” one point.
First miss since 2023/2024
Not only Bochum’s comeback was memorable, but also Gnabry’s miss. For the first time since the 2023/24 season, Bayern missed a penalty again – since then, only Kane had taken one. However, the Englishman was not on the pitch against VfL.
It was particularly bitter for Gnabry: it was only his fourth penalty kick ever. He scored twice: in 2016/17 against Schalke and in 2022/23 against Bochum. But he had already failed once in 2017/18 – for Hoffenheim and against Bayern. Back then, he faced Sven Ulreich, who is now his teammate.
