The basketball world has been waiting for a big announcement from Dwyane Wade and one has arrived – but not the one we were expecting. The shooting guard has been holding his cards close to his chest regarding where he will spend his 16th NBA season – if anywhere. He is expected to re-sign with Miami Heat but no contract has been agreed yet, which is causing speculation around whether it is actually going to happen.
Wade signs lifetime contract with Li-Ning
Wade had another contract on his mind, the lifetime contract with shoe company Li-Ning; the brand of the famous Chinese gymnast of the same name. Wade’s own latest trainer design is called the Way of Wade 7 and he was in Beijing for the unveiling this week, which may be why he has not had the time to put pen to paper with the Heat just yet.
Building a legacy
You cannot really blame the guy, given that the deal with Li-Ning could be worth tens of millions of dollars. Eye-watering figures that he will earn without even throwing a ball. Wade reflected on the deal as ‘Something I needed to do from the standpoint of building something. I tried to set out to build a legacy for myself and my family.’
Wade has been working with Li-Ning since 2012 and it looks to be a mutually great arrangement. He says that he will think about his future when he gets back from China but for now, the only contract that he is thinking about is the one to build his legacy with Li-Ning.
Will he re-sign for Miami Heat or call time on his NBA career?
Wade has always said that he wanted to retire at Miami Heat but the delay in re-signing for them indicates that he may have had a change of heart. It is not like he will be in desperate need of the money now he has a lifetime contract with a top fashion brand.
