Girona FC are still the team of the moment in La Liga. They impressively defended their lead at the top of the table against Sevilla FC
FC Barcelona and Real Madrid had already gone ahead on Sunday, so FC Girona had to win their home game against Sevilla FC to go back to the top of the La Liga table. Their last game was a disappointing draw against bottom-of-the-table Almeria – and they also got off to a poor start against Sevilla. Isaac put the 17th-placed side ahead after ten minutes.
However, Girona did not need long to respond. Three minutes later, it was Dovbyk who converted a cross from Savio to equalize. Just two minutes later, it was the Ukrainian again, this time from Portu’s cross to make it 2-1. Everything went too quickly for Sevilla at this stage, with Girona and especially Dovbyk playing themselves into a frenzy. This culminated in the 19th minute when the attacker outwitted Sergio Ramos and scored his hat-trick with a powerful shot into the right corner – in the space of six minutes.
Sevilla took the full brunt of Girona’s confidence, but was at least able to prevent a fourth goal before the break. Albeit luckily, Portu only hit the post from close range (38′).
Tsygankov makes it all clear
After the restart, however, it was not long before Girona extended their lead and made everything clear – Tsygankov made it 4:1 (58′) after another neat and quick attack down the left.
There were no major highlights for the remainder of the match, but Sevilla could not avoid an even clearer defeat. Shortly before the end, substitute Stuani made sure of the final score after Miguel had crossed in the penalty area (89′).
Girona remain top of La Liga, one point ahead of Real Madrid, who have played one game less. Next up for both teams is the Copa del Rey. Girona play at Mallorca on Wednesday (7.30pm), Sevilla at Atletico Madrid on Thursday (9pm).
