Dolgopolov calls for ban for Medvedev and Co.

Kiev – Former Ukrainian tennis player Alexander Dolgopolov has called for a ban on Russian tennis professionals in light of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

He said it was not enough to exclude Russian teams from the Billie Jean King Cup and the Davis Cup, but still allow Russian players to play in the tournaments under a neutral flag. “To let them continue to play after simply saying a few words that they are against the war: I don’t think that’s enough,” Dolgopolov told the BBC. “It doesn’t change anything.”

Dolgopolov was ranked No 13 in the world at one point in his career ten years ago. He ended his career last year. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the 34-year-old is staying in Kiev to defend his country. He has also received weapons training for this, Dolgopolov told the BBC.

“I think every Russian is responsible for their government and their president,” Dolgopolov said. He said he knew most of the Russian players personally and had also played against current number one Daniil Mewedev. “They are good guys, nothing against them,” said the Ukrainian. But: “I think Russia should be excluded from any participation in sport. “
