The dispute over the creation of a European Super League in football will be before the European Court of Justice from this Monday onwards.
Oral hearings are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Luxembourg. The European Super League Company had filed a lawsuit against UEFA and FIFA with a court in Madrid, which in turn referred the case to the ECJ. The hearing is the first step, after an opinion by an ECJ advocate general, a ruling is expected in a few months.
The Super League is seeking a declaration that UEFA and FIFA opposed the creation of a Super League by “acting as a cartel and abusing their dominant position in the market for the organisation of international competitions for football clubs in Europe and in the market for the commercialisation of the rights attached to those competitions”.
Twelve top clubs had announced the creation of a super league in April 2021, but quickly scrapped the plan after massive protests from leagues, associations and fans. However, the three top clubs Real Madrid, Juventus Turin and FC Barcelona still want to set up a Super League to compete with UEFA’s Champions League.
