“Discussions about who will drive it first”: How Lamborghini plans to introduce Temerario

Lamborghini’s GT3 successor Temerario is initially only to be available in very limited numbers: How the Italians are planning its introduction in 2026 and how they are keeping an eye on costs

Lamborghini is currently developing the Temerario GT3, the successor to the successful Huracan GT3. The car has not yet been unveiled – and, as previously reported, the test premiere is still a long time coming. Nevertheless, the Italians are aiming to deliver the new turbo-bolide to the teams in 2026 after test runs this year.

“Our current plan is for the first races with the new car to take place in 2026, but that in any case we will continue to field the current Huracan GT3, which is still very competitive,” Lamborghini’s chief technical officer Rouven Mohr said in November 2024 in an interview with Motorsport.tv,

The reason for this is likely that Lamborghini cannot produce so many cars in such a short time. According to which the number of Temerario GT3s will initially be very limited.

“Of course we can’t supply everyone at the same time”

“As far as the production volume is concerned, it is clear that the GT3 will be produced more or less on the same production line as the road car,” explains Mohr. ”We have to find a middle ground in terms of production volume and how quickly we can bring the car to market.”

In fact, the first units of the Temerario road car, whose bodyshell, like the GT3 chassis, is being built at Audi’s Böllinger Höfe plant, are scheduled for delivery to customers at the end of 2026. A major feat for Lamborghini, if the schedule holds.

“Of course we want to enter the new car at least in the most important championships, but based on the selected teams, it is clear that we are not able to supply all the teams at the same time,” explains Mohr, outlining how they will proceed with the Temerario GT3. ”So we will probably hold talks with the teams in the various championships to decide who will start with it first.”

Theoretically, it would also be possible for the DTM teams Abt and Grasser, for example, to enter one new and one old car each.

“Technical complexity has increased since GTE ended”

According to Mohr, Lamborghini does not want to rush the introduction of the new car because expectations are high and the Huracan is still running successfully. It is “top priority” to provide the teams with “a properly developed and competitive car,” he clarifies.

What were the priorities during development? Mohr emphasizes that “the technical complexity of GT3 cars has increased significantly, especially since the end of the GTE class.” This is also evident when comparing the Huracan, which was first delivered in its basic version in 2016, with the current vehicles.

In terms of aerodynamics, suspension technology, the V8 turbo engine based on the production model and adjustment options for the driver, the Temerario GT3 is said to be state of the art. Nevertheless, the use of numerous series parts ensures that, unlike other manufacturers, the operating costs do not skyrocket.

How Lamborghini fights the GT3 cost explosion

“If you look at a few cars in the field at the moment, you can see that it is really difficult for some customers to use these cars,” criticizes Mohr. “There are big differences in terms of setup complexity, systems and operating costs.”

Lamborghini, on the other hand, does not want to run a factory team, but rather a customer team. And they have no plans to “run the cars at factory level” in the future either. The focus on customer racing is also evident, for example, from the fact that different teams are able to win races with the car at Lamborghini.

Mohr cites the DTM as an example: “Of course we won the championship with SSR, but the first and last race were won by Grasser Racing, a long-standing partner. I like that, even though from a manufacturer’s point of view you could say that it’s better when only one team wins.”
