Denmark Name Amateurs and Futsal Players in National Team

Denmark

This week sees the domestic leagues put on hold as international matches take place across the world. One of the big talking points is that Denmark has been forced to name amateur players and futsal players for their games against Slovakia and Wales.

Denmark players had refused to play until sponsorship dispute was resolved

The Denmark players have been embroiled in a dispute surrounding commercial rights, an issue that has been bubbling for some time. Despite Eriksen stating that the players would be happy to call a truce to play the games under the previous commercial rights agreement, the Danish FA have seemingly called their bluff by naming a team that consists of lower league players and players from the futsal national team.

Match against Slovakia takes place tonight

The team lines up against Slovakia this evening in what could be a very strange match given that there will be no top-level professional football players on the field. They are then due to play Wales on Sunday in their opening match of the UEFA Nations League. Resolving the dispute before then seems unlikely at this late stage and it seems like the Danish FA are standing firm on their position, even if it costs them in terms of losing matches.

Denmark risked being thrown out of the 2020 European Championship

They could have faced being thrown out of the 2020 European Championship if they had failed to name a team, so they opted for a solution of futsal and lower league players who are not involved in the dispute. The regular first-team players are said to be unhappy with terms related to individual sponsorship agreements with companies that are competitors of the national team sponsors. They are also reported to be unhappy at the travel arrangements that are currently in place.
