Public prosecutors in Croatia claim that Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren lied under oath regarding his transfer from Zagreb to Lyon in 2010, in particular about additional clauses in his professional contract that regulated transfer fees. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

Zdravko Mamic embezzlement case
Earlier this year, former Dinamo Zagreb chief executive Zdravko Mamic and three other team officials were convicted for fraud and tax evasion related to embezzling millions in the transfers of Luka Modric and Dejan Lovren from Dinamo to Tottenham and Lyon, respectively. Even though they denied any wrongdoing, evidence was irrefutable. Mamic was given a six and a half year prison sentence but not before he fled to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Lovren faces up to six years in prison
In the trial’s aftermath, Dejan Lovren has been charged with perjury, an allegation he vehemently denies. This is his Instagram post:
“I want to tell everyone that I’m innocent,” he wrote. “I did not commit any criminal offense. I’m proud of my life, of what my family and I have achieved. … I reject all accusations with indignation. I will win this battle.”

The investigation into his misconduct started last year.
“The county prosecutor’s office in Osijek is investigating Dejan Lovren on a suspicion of giving false testimony.”
It took nine months for Lovren to be officially charged with false testimony. Back in March, Luka Modric was charged with the same offense after changing his testimony regarding his 2008 transfer to Tottenham mid-trial. In Croatia, a perjury conviction brings a jail term of between six months and five years. The two now await a trial date.
