DeChambeau Wins Northern Trust to Boost Ryder Cup Chances

Bryson DeChambeau won the Northern Trust in style yesterday, as he birdied six of the last 11 holes in a career-best eight under in the third round. His 2 under in the fourth round was enough to clinch his win by four shots. Second place went to Tony Finau in what was a strange tournament for the top-ranked golfers.

Northern Trust – Top three are outside the World’s top 20 golfers

DeChambeau went into the tournament ranked 21st in the World rankings, whilst Finau was 30th. Third-placed Cameron Smith was ranked 49th, so it really was a set of results that were very unexpected, as all of the usual favourites struggled at Ridgewood.

DeChambeau may have earned himself a place at Ryder Cup

DeChambeau will be hoping that his win will have given him a timely boost to claim a place in the US Ryder Cup team. Team captain Jim Furyk names his first three wildcards on 5th September, following the Dell Technologies Championship. DeChambeau’s outstanding performance will have definitely given Furyk a big nudge.

It is expected that Furyk will pick the former World no. 1 Tiger Woods, who has recently seen a resurgence in his form. Phil Mickelson is also widely expected to claim a place through wildcard selection. Bryson DeChambeau only just missed out on an automatic place after finishing in ninth place and his Northern Trust win will make it very hard for him to be overlooked.

Next up – Dell Technologies Championship

Tony Finau’s second place may have played him into contention, whilst Xander Schauffele and Matt Kuchar are players that are also in the hat. So there is a lot at stake going into the Dell Technologies Championship in Boston. Justin Thomas will be defending his title, whilst Rory McIlroy returns after missing The Northern Trust. Tiger Woods has also been confirmed for the event, along with Fowler, Stenson and Snedeker who have been recently out with injuries.
