Davis gala not enough: Mavs miss playoffs – Miami makes history

The Dallas Mavericks have missed out on the playoffs. Despite an outstanding performance by Anthony Davis, they suffered a clear defeat at the Memphis Grizzlies. The other 10-seed, the Miami Heat, on the other hand, made it into the postseason after overtime in Atlanta.

The Memphis Grizzlies are the 8-seed in the Western Conference, defying 40 points (16/29 FG) and nine rebounds from Mavs superstar Anthony Davis. The course was set in the first quarter, which the hosts won 39-24, leading by as many as 21 points.

Ja Morant (12 of 22 points in the first quarter), who was questionable due to ankle problems, got off to a flying start, while the Mavs had major problems with rookie center Zach Edey (15, 11 rebounds), who grabbed a total of six offensive rebounds. In the third quarter, Dallas briefly closed the gap to just seven points (75-68), but Memphis responded with a 12-4 run and the limping Davis slowly ran out of steam.

There was no second option; after Davis, Klay Thompson (18, 4/11 3P) and Brandon Williams (16) were the best scorers. Jaren Jackson Jr. (24) scored the most points for Memphis, while Desmond Bane (22, 9 assists) confirmed his recent good form. The Grizzlies will now face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs.

Heat’s three-point barrage secures playoff spot

While Dallas had to throw in the towel, the Miami Heat became the first 10-seed to advance in the play-in tournament in the Eastern Conference. The Heat won a thriller against the Atlanta Hawks, hitting five of six three-pointers in overtime.

Backup guard Davion Mitchell (16 points, 5 assists) hit three, top scorer Tyler Herro (30) added two more, while Atlanta failed to score in the final two minutes of overtime. The Hawks had quickly made up a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but the visitors were not impressed. A determined drive by Trae Young (29, 11 assists) tied the game with just over a second left, but Atlanta couldn’t do much after that.

Center Onyeka Okongwu (28, 12 rebounds) and reserve forward Georges Niang (20) also played well for the Hawks, while top pick Zaccharie Risacher (3, 1/11 FG, 0/7 3P) had a very weak evening. For the Heat, who will now face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs, Andrew Wiggins (20, 8 assists) and Bam Adebayo (17, 11 rebounds, 5 blocks) provided important relief.
