Davis Cup team likely to travel to China without Zverev

This is likely to significantly reduce the chances of reaching the final round. Germany’s best tennis player will probably not play in the group stage. The date and venue are highly unfavorable

The German tennis team will probably be without Alexander Zverev in the group phase of the Davis Cup from September 10 to 15 in China. The French Open finalist will “in all likelihood not be available”, announced the German Tennis Federation (DTB).

The DTB cited the “complicated Davis Cup schedule” and the associated “enormous travel stress” as the reason. The group stage in Zhuhai immediately follows the US Open in New York with the men’s final on September 8. Zverev is also firmly scheduled for the Laver Cup in Berlin from September 20-22, followed by important ATP tournaments in Asia.

The qualifying team should do it

Captain Michael Kohlmann has nominated Jan-Lennard Struff and Dominik Koepfer as well as doubles players Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz for the Davis Cup group stage. The fifth place in the team will be allocated at a later date.

“In this constellation, we won the tough away match in Hungary thanks to a strong team performance and qualified for the group stage. I expect the same positive energy for the arduous journey to China,” said Kohlmann. Zverev was also absent from the qualifying round against Hungary due to illness.

In China, the German team will play against the USA, Slovakia and Chile in Group C. The matches will be played on hard court at the Hengqin International Tennis Center. The two best teams in each of the four groups of four will advance to the final tournament in Málaga from November 19 to 24. The 2024 Davis Cup winner will be crowned there.

“Our goal is to get through this tough group and return to the finals in Málaga after 2022,” said Kohlmann.
