Munich – The German Davis Cup team boss Michael Kohlmann hopes for a return of the injured Alexander Zverev to the tennis court still in late summer.
The German number one underwent surgery on his right ankle in Munich on Tuesday. In the semi-finals of the French Open against Spain’s Rafael Nadal, Zverev had twisted his ankle badly last Friday and had to retire. According to him, the examination in Germany revealed that all three lateral ankle ligaments had been torn.
A start at the next Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon from 27 June is ruled out. The US Open in New York runs from 29 August to 11 September, followed by the group phase of the team competition for the German Davis Cup team in Hamburg.
“I think it could be tight. But I hope for him and for us that he will be fit again for the US Open,” Kohlmann told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur on Wednesday. German Davis Cup opponents in Zverev’s native city are France, Belgium and Australia. The two best teams will reach the quarter-finals. The finals will be held in Malaga at the end of November.
