Hamburg – The German men’s tennis team enjoys home rights in the Davis Cup intermediate round. One of the four group stages will take place from 14 to 18 September at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum, as announced by the German Tennis Federation.
The federation had applied together with the emotion group event agency. In addition, Olympic champion Alexander Zverev had strongly advocated that one of the four groups be played in Germany. Germany’s best tennis player also wants to be there himself in Hamburg.
“The new date in September has made it possible for me to take part in the ‘Group Finals’. And if I play at this time, why not play in Germany? That’s why I also tried to make the Davis Cup in Hamburg possible,” Zverev said. “I will not only actively take part in it, but I will also be intensively involved in the event,” said the Hamburg native.
Germany had qualified for the intermediate round with a 3:1 victory in Brazil at the beginning of March. Apart from Hamburg, the World Tennis Federation (ITF) decided on Bologna, Glasgow and Malaga as venues. The groups will be drawn on 31 March. It is not yet clear where the final round, for which the first two players from each of the four groups of four qualify, will take place from 23 to 27 November.
What is certain, however, is that Germany will also enjoy home rights in 2023 and 2024 if the team of national coach Michael Kohlmann qualifies for the group stage. However, venues other than Hamburg could be considered. The last time Germany played in front of a home crowd was in 2020 in Düsseldorf against Belarus.
