Australia’s tennis team defeated Belgium in the opening match of the intermediate round of the Davis Cup in Hamburg
In the clash between Germany’s group opponents, a strong Alex de Minaur defeated David Goffin 6-2, 6-2 in the second match to make it 2-0. In a one-sided match, the world number 22 kept his cool against the 31-year-old Belgian. Earlier, Jason Kubler had won his Davis Cup debut against Zizou Bergs 6:4, 1:6, 6:3. Only a few spectators had come to the tennis stadium at the Rothenbaum.
In the doubles, which was no longer significant for the victory, the Australians crowned their strong performance. Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell, who won the Wimbledon tournament this year, defeated Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6:1, 6:3.
The group stage of the finals will be played in four different European cities – including Hamburg – between 13 and 18 September. The German team will meet France on Wednesday. The knockout round of the Cup final will take place from 22 to 27 November in Malaga, Spain.
