DTM rookie David Schumacher fractured a lumbar vertebra in Saturday’s serious accident at Hockenheim and has to wear a brace
The violent accident in Saturday’s race at the Hockenheimring was the big excitement at the 2022 DTM season finale before the title decision the following day. It has now been revealed that one of the drivers involved in the crash has been injured: David Schumacher.
The 20-year-old son of former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher broke his first lumbar vertebra in Saturday’s accident. Father Ralf confirmed this to the German Press Agency ‘dpa’ on Tuesday.
“When David came home, he was still complaining of back pain. We then decided to go to a hospital in Salzburg to have an MRI done. It turned out that a lumbar vertebra was broken,” Ralf Schumacher is quoted by ‘dpa’.
According to the current state of affairs, an operation is not necessary for David Schumacher. At the moment, the Winward Mercedes driver is wearing a corset. Father Ralf Schumacher assumes that his son will have to rest for several weeks: “According to the doctors treating him, that means a break of about six weeks for David.”
The DTM season ended on Sunday. David Schumacher, however, had to miss the last race of the season as a result of Saturday’s accident. For him, the 2022 season was the rookie season. He completed it without scoring any points. His best result was P11 in Saturday’s race at Spa-Francorchamps.
