After a 1-0 defeat at relegation candidates Everton FC, who seemed to be in a hopeless free fall, Champions League qualification is moving further and further away for the Premier League seventh-placed side. And because bystanders captured the scene on their mobile phones, it spread rapidly on the internet.
“It is never easy to deal with your emotions in difficult moments like the one we are experiencing right now. Nevertheless, we must always be respectful and patient and set a good example for all the young people who love this beautiful game,” Ronaldo wrote on his social media channels that evening.
“I want to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, invite this fan to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship,” the Portuguese continued. United host bottom side Norwich City on Saturday.
Police launch investigation
In the meantime, police are also investigating the incident and are in contact with both clubs, a spokesman said on Sunday. He said there were reports that a boy had been assaulted by a “member of the visiting team”. ManUnited pledged its cooperation to the authorities.
