“Creates a nice atmosphere”: pyrotechnics allowed in Norwegian professional soccer

As part of a pilot project, pyrotechnics are permitted in the stadiums of first and second division teams in Norway. The test phase will run up to and including the 2025 season, after which the situation will be reassessed

Pryo technology is “part of Norwegian fan culture”, says Norway’s Culture Minister Lubna Jaffery, explaining the move to allow the use of flares, smoke pots and the like in Norwegian professional soccer. “It creates a good mood and a nice atmosphere around the games, provided it is used in a safe and responsible way.”

Previously, fireworks were banned in the Scandinavian country. Even after approval, strict requirements for the use of pyrotechnics continue to apply. “Provided that these requirements are met, we think it is reasonable to try,” says Norwegian Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl confidently.

Unauthorized use is to be curbed

It is hoped that the approval will curb the unauthorized use of pyrotechnics. Anders Kjellevold, head of the Norsk Supporterallianse fans’ association, spoke to TV2 of a “major breakthrough” after years of negotiations. He predicted that the new regulation would work “very well” at the matches. The pilot project will run from now until the upcoming 2025 season.

In Germany, the use of pyrotechnics is still prohibited – and in the event of non-compliance, the DFB will impose fines on the clubs, some of which will be high. At the opening match of the European Championship in Munich between Germany and Scotland (5:1), pyrotechnics were last used as part of the opening show. UEFA had to obtain permission for this from the local authorities and justified the use of pyrotechnics by stating that certified experts would carry out the controlled use
