Crazy prize money! Winner stunned

The success at the WTA Finals brings the American around 4.8 million US dollars in prize money. The 20-year-old reacts in disbelief.

The US American Coco Gauff reacted in disbelief to her record prize money at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. She will collect almost 4.8 million US dollars (around 4.48 million euros) for her victory – when asked about it, the 20-year-old laughed. “What did you say? 4.8?” Gauff replied, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do with it. That’s a lot of money.’

According to the WTA, Gauff will receive the highest amount ever paid out to a tennis player in a professional tour event. This consists of bonuses for the group matches and victories in the knockout round.

The previous record was held by Australian Ashleigh Barty: in 2019, she received $4.42 million (around €4.12 million) at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen, China.

Well paid into the history books

“I hope I’m one of the highest paid tennis players this year or one of the highest paid athletes, that would be exciting,” Gauff said. The second biggest title in tennis means a lot to her – “and just going down in history forever is pretty cool.”

Gauff is also the youngest winner of the women’s season-ending event in 20 years. She won the dramatic final against Chinese Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
