Two days after the official confirmation of Lewis Hamilton’s sensational switch from Mercedes to Ferrari, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion has spoken out publicly for the first time. In a post on the Instagram platform, Hamilton looks back on some “crazy days full of emotions” and explains that it is time for him to open a new chapter in his life in 2025
The opportunity to drive in Ferrari red is another childhood dream come true for him, says Hamilton. The switch from Mercedes to Ferrari reminds Hamilton of his first team switch ten years ago, when he switched from McLaren to the Silver Arrows after the 2012 season.
Back then, too, many would not have understood his decision. But then, as now, Hamilton feels he made the right move. Even if it was another leap into the unknown.
Hamilton also thanks Mercedes in detail in the article. In particular to Head of Motorsport Toto Wolff and the late Niki Lauda, “who was a great support to me and whom I miss every day.”
Finally, Hamilton promises to approach his last season with Mercedes in Formula 1 “more motivated than ever” in order to end the joint chapter on a high after eleven years. “

Mercedes has been a big part of my life since I was 13, so this decision was the hardest one I’ve ever had to make. I am incredibly proud of everything we have achieved together and I am very grateful for the hard work and dedication of everyone I have worked with over the years, and of course for Toto, for his friendship, leadership and commitment.
Together we have won titles, broken records and become the most successful driver-team partnership in the history of Formula 1. And of course I must not forget Niki, who was a great support to me and whom I miss every day.
I must also thank the entire Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz and everyone in the company in Germany and around the world for supporting me over these 26 years.
But the time has come to change and take on a new challenge. I still remember the feeling of taking a leap into the unknown when I joined Mercedes in 2013. I know that not everyone understood that at the time, but it was the right move and I have that feeling again now. I’m excited to see what I can bring to this new challenge and what we can achieve together.
But at the moment I’m not thinking about 2025, my focus is on the coming season and getting back on track with Mercedes. I am more motivated than ever, fitter and more focused than ever and want to help Mercedes win again. I am 100 percent committed and determined to end my partnership with the team with a success.
