Two days before the World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein, the German national team has to cope with a Corona case.
As the DFB announced on Tuesday, a national player tested positive on Monday. The affected player, who was immediately isolated, has been vaccinated and is symptom-free. According to “Bild”, the player in question is Bayern central defender Niklas Süle, who had already tested positive a year ago.
According to the DFB, four other players in the quarters must also be quarantined on the instructions of the health authorities because they have been classified as category 1 contacts despite negative tests. The DFB had previously cancelled the team training scheduled for Tuesday at short notice Already on Monday, national coach Hansi Flick had post-nominated Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, but the DFB had not yet provided an explanation for this.
“The number of Corona infections has recently risen sharply again nationwide. That is why we are consistently continuing to implement the hygiene and behavioural rules during the last international match of the year in order to act as responsibly as possible in the current infection situation,” Oliver Bierhoff, director of national teams and academy, was quoted as saying on Tuesday. “This news is very bitter so shortly before the final two matches in the World Cup qualifiers – for the coaching team as well as for the entire squad. But health comes first, of course. I wish the player who tested positive a speedy recovery and that he remains symptom-free.”
On Thursday, the DFB team will host underdog Liechtenstein in Wolfsburg for the penultimate match in the World Cup qualifiers. Three days later, Armenia will host Flick’s team, which has already qualified for the World Cup.
