Marco Friedl has been infected with the Corona virus during the international break and will not return to Bremen for the time being. Instead, Jean-Manuel Mbom is back earlier than expected.
Werder Bremen announced a Corona case on Sunday: Marco Friedl, who was not part of the Austrian squad in the World Cup qualifiers but was only supposed to be on call, has tested positive and is in domestic isolation in his native Austria.
“Marco had noticed symptoms on himself on the days off and then took a test, which turned out positive despite being fully vaccinated,” explained Werder team doctor Dr Daniel Hellermann. “He informed us immediately, after which we took the necessary steps together with the health authorities in Bremen and in his Austrian home country.”
For Werder coach Markus Anfang Friedl’s absence is sportingly bearable for the time being: In the upcoming second division match against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday, the 23-year-old central defender will be missing anyway due to a yellow suspension.
Mbom “in the coming days” already back in action
Jean-Manuel Mbom, on the other hand, will be back earlier than planned. After his red card in the 0:4 against Poland, the right-back will return early from the U-21 national team. He will be back “in the coming days”, according to the Bremen press release.
