Former UFC champion and Irish mixed martial arts superstar Conor McGregor pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and struck a plea deal with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office which will see him get away with five days of community service and an anger management program lasting one to three days.
“I just want to say I’m thankful to the DA and the judge for allowing me to move forward,”
“I want to say to my friends, my family, my fans — thank you for your support.”
The sentence means he’ll escape relatively unpunished for his actions back on April 5, when he threw a metal dolly through a bus window carrying several UFC fighters, including current undefeated UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. This is what the Russian had to say at the time of the incident:
“To be honest, I don’t want [McGregor] to go to jail,”
“We have to fight. If we have to fight, let’s fight. Send me the location. Please, we have to fix this. Me and you. One-on-one. You want 10-on-10? OK.
“He comes with media, with cameras when I’m alone. Of course I want to go outside, but they don’t let me leave the bus. He knows this.”
Everyone in the UFC community condemned Conor McGregor’s behaviour and UFC president Dana White was no exception, calling McGregor’s actions “disgusting”.
Conor McGregor plea deal
Originally, “The Notorious” 30-year-old faced 12 criminal charges, including two felony criminal mischief charges which carried a maximum prison sentence of seven years. The agreement with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office involves no jail time, full restitution to the bus company for any damages suffered (which McGregor has already fulfilled), orders of protection for Ray Borg, Jason Ledbetter and Michael Chiesa (the fighters he injured) and no criminal record.
Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov next?
Conor McGregor has not fought since the mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather. The resolution of his criminal case paves the way for a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov, a bout which could become the biggest fight in UFC history.
