Marbella – Austrian Dominic Thiem has lost his first match after months of injury. The 2020 US Open champion lost 3-6, 4-6 to Argentina’s Pedro Cachin in the first round at the Challenger tournament in Marbella.
Thiem (28) had not played a tennis match since June 2021 due to hand surgery. Recently, he had to postpone his return several times because he did not yet feel completely fit. Thiem was defeated by Cachin, the world number 228, after 81 minutes.
Swiss Stan Wawrinka also suffered an opening defeat. The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner lost to Sweden’s Elias Ymer 2-6.
Elias Ymer 2:6, 4:6. The 37-year-old Wawrinka had not even played a match for more than a year due to several injuries.
