Nobody at FC Bayern really shone in the past second half of the season. The Frenchman, however, was at least not completely absent, which is why Kingsley Coman is set in the coaching team. What is missing is precision in the final third of the attack.
In the 2-1 defeat against Denmark, when national coach Didier Deschamps tested some new players, Kingsley Coman was on the bench for 90 minutes. So did Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema. The Bavarian attacker was then back in the starting eleven for the two 1-1 draws against Croatia and Austria. His status in the team is therefore clear: He is not a test candidate, but one of his country’s stars – and one of the best offensive players in the Bundesliga.
While FC Bayern had played a weak second half of the season, no one really shone. But, as those responsible at Säbener Straße also say, Coman was one of the few players, along with Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer, who performed at times. And it was thanks to him that Munich did not look even worse in the Champions League than they already did. After all, the 26-year-old prevented embarrassment with his last-minute equaliser in the round of 16 first leg in Salzburg and saved his Bavarians from going behind with a sensational save in the second leg against the Austrians. He was certainly not a major culprit in Munich’s two nights of failure in the quarter-final exit to Villarreal either.
He has long since won the internal race against Gnabry and Sané
In the Bundesliga, he has a grade average of 2.93 in 21 and 15 of those rated appearances, with six goals and three assists. These nine scorer points are too few for his class. Nevertheless, he has long since won the internal race for the starting spots against his competitors Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané. The left side, offensively, is his. And it should remain so in the coming years – after all, Coman and the Munich decision-makers agreed in winter on a collaboration until 2027, on a new five-year contract. A sign of his standing at the club. And not to forget: What almost goes unnoticed in view of his seven years, his experience and all his titles with the German record champions is his age. Coman is only 26 – and he is the coach’s number one choice.
More confident, but: lacks precision
When Munich’s offensive play on the right side was very quiet, especially in the second half of the season, the left wing was regularly the centre of attention thanks to Coman. His hooks, with which he leaves opponents standing in rows, are almost unique. He is fast anyway, and in the final third he seems more confident since his winning goal in the 2020 Champions League final. Coman looks for the finish more often. What is missing is precision – just like with the final passes. He will work on this flaw. It would be a final polish for the offensive diamond at FC Bayern.
